She entered the music industry as a young girl, winning local contests by when she was 10 years old and recording for the first time at the age of 14. She signed with Rounder Records in 1985 and recorded her first solo album in 1987. She was asked to join the group with who she continues to perform Alison Krauss and Union Station and released her first album as a group in 1989.
